History of Leeds Baroque

In 1999, prominent musicologist Peter Holman (Director of the Parley of Instruments and Opera Restor’d) was recruited to the University of Leeds School of Music, where he is now Professor of Historical Musicology.

One of the consequences of his appointment was the formation of a new regional baroque orchestra (LBO), performing on period instruments under Peter’s direction. Members are drawn from professional and non-professional players with students from the region’s music colleges. Free workshops given by leaders in the field of baroque performance practice provide training, and the funds available are used to enable members of the orchestra to perform concerts with internationally renowned soloists.

In the summer of 2005, LBO joined forces with Leeds University Baroque Choir to become simply Leeds Baroque.

Over the last few seasons, Leeds Baroque have performed at the University of Leeds, Leeds and Bradford Cathedrals, the National Centre for Early Music in York, the Georgian Theatre in Richmond, Salts’ Mill, the Swaledale Festival and the Hexham Festival.
